I went from print to ebooks and sometimes I go back. For me digital reading is more convenient. I can adjust the font--I like that. I can press my digit on a word and up comes the dictionary. Ebooks can't replicate the print world and it shouldn't, but it will replace it. This is a great post and I'm sure you'll get lots of interesting comments.

You can "tweet" highlighted portions of the book you are reading using the Amazon Kindle 2 and up. You can also post straight to Facebook. The mere fact that Twitter hasn't realized this yet is their loss. A real reader can twit real excerpts, even from DRM protected books.

I agree completely and would go further that our conception of books and the collective library are more important to the flow of human thought, discourse and experience than any other media form. A simple look at history will show that the written word has far surpassed any other media in influencing humanity.

Twitter is nothing more than a rock skipping across the ocean of ideas. No depth in Twitter. Yet, publishing is not in decline when 90 million tweets are published and everyone is providing content.

Traditional publishing may be in decline, but I think your fear as an author is misplaced. There will always be a place for an author as an individual to reach up to the surface and grab the ideas skipping along the top and pull them down to the depths. And as has always been the case, others will follow those ideas.

The primary problem with this idea is that publishers don’t have the ebook rights to many of the old paper books so they have no right to digitalize them, and if they do have ebook rights, they’ve probably already made them available as ebooks.

Publishers aren’t set up, either, to handle the warehouse and manpower of this kind of system so the scheme would cost far more than it would make.

Woody -

If you have the copyright to the work, or if it's public domain, you can upload it. It just needs to be in the epub format. We'll be reopening the converter soon so if you have it as HTML you'll be able to get it into epub format. We'll announce the converter launch on in a blog post.

BTW - you can actually get to your BG uploads on the iphone via Stanza by opening Stanza, opening the online catalog option, choosing BookGlutton, choosing uploads, logging in when requested, and then going all the way back out to your library (just keep backing out until you're at Stanza's opening screen). Going back in your uploads will show up there for you.

Very cool indeed! Though BookGlutton is a lot more than Wired let on. Thompson kinda let his readers down in not highlighting some of the tools you guys have in place. BG offers a better dynamic than just simply "discuss books".

So here's to hoping people clicked through the article to experience BookGlutton themselves. Kudos!
